Tennis team wins; O’Neil suspended
April 10, 1991
NIU men’s tennis coach Charles Merzbacher suspended Greg O’Neil indefinitely after the Huskies’ 7-2 victory over Marquette Wednesday.
Merzbacher said he didn’t feel O’Neil was putting enough effort into his matches. O’Neil suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Robert Budiono.
“We can’t mess around out there,” Merzbacher said. “We have to get the job done and get off the court.”
This is the second suspension for O’Neil this season.
Merzbacher also said he didn’t feel O’Neil was inspired for his doubles match with partner Erik Andersch.
Andersch and O’Neil edged Budiono and Jon Calvillo 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). It appeared to be another routine win for the No. 15 doubles team in the region when the NIU duo broke Calvillo in the first game of the first set.
In the third set, O’Neil faced double match point on his serve, but he aced Budiono and set up Andersch for an easy forehand volley winner for deuce. Marquette got its third match point on Budiono’s overhead, but O’Neil spanked a forehand winner for the second deuce of the game. O’Neil hit a service winner and set up Andersch’s winner to force the eventual tie-breaker. O’Neil hit six winners in the tie-breaker.
After the match, Merzbacher spoke to O’Neil. O’Neil walked off and Merzbacher then talked to the rest of the team.
“Even when Dustin (Dobrin) loses, he goes down fighting,” Merzbacher said. “If a guy has more talent than you, you have to go down fighting.”
Mats Persson continued to roll with a 6-2, 6-0 win; Andersch won 6-1, 6-0; Dobrin lost 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-5; Steve Senter rolled 6-4, 7-5; and Paul Gill won 6-3, 6-1. NIU swept the doubles.
