Volleyball squad signs 3 standouts

NIU volleyball coach Pete Waite announced the signing of three high school volleyball players to National Letters of Intent.

Joyce Book (St. Louis, Mo.), Danielle Gerenz (Eagan, Minn.), and Shelby Snyder (Fountain Valley, Calif.), represent the Huskies’ 1991 volleyball recruiting class.

“All three players have outstanding experience, which gives them the advantage to instantly fit in with our program,” Waite said. “Joyce is a versatile hitter we could use either in the middle or on the outside.

“Danielle is an outstanding hitter who can play either the right or left side. Shelby will fill the role as our starting setter. I have extreme confidence in her, because she played for the Pacific Coast Junior Club which is one of the best,” Waite said.

Book, a 6-0 hitter, was a four-year varsity player for Bishop DuBourg High School. At the end of her senior year, she racked up 194 kills, averaged five solo blocks per match and boasted an 88 percent serve average.

Gerenz, 5-9, earned three varsity letters at Rosemount High School in Minn. While at RHS, Gerenz helped her team compile a 66-16 ledger. Both her junior and senior seasons she was selected First-Team All-Red Lake Conference.

Snyder joins the NIU gang with four years of varsity play under her belt and five years of club ball experience. The 5-6 “quarterback” earned First-Team All-Sunset League accolades in 1989, 1990 and 1991. Her senior season was sweetened when she was named Second-Team All-California Interscholastic Federation.

NIU begins its season Aug. 30-31 when it heads to the Colorado State University Invitational at Fort Collins, Colo.
