NIU clobbers weekend foes

NIU women’s tennis coach Patty Groth isn’t going to complain too much about Saturday’s windy conditions.

That would be the one aspect of the weekend Groth could complain about after her Huskies chalked up two North Star Conference wins and a non-conference triumph as well.

The victorious weekend pushes the Huskies season mark to 14 wins against nine losses.

It all started Saturday as NIU posted 9-0 whitewashes of Wright State University and DePaul University followed by a 7-2 Sunday triumph over Bradley University.

“It was a great weekend. We win three matches, we have two shutouts, both of those come against conference opponents , all of that’s great to see. On Saturday, the winds made playing conditions pretty difficult,” Groth noted.

In the North Star triumphs over Wright State and DePaul, the Huskies swept every singles and doubles contest in the minimum two sets.

On Sunday against Bradley, NIU wrapped up the conquest by winning five of six singles contests. The Braves also managed to snare one doubles contest to account for the final Tally.

The women’s squad remains at home for yet another weekend of conference play.

The Huskies face the University of Akron at 1 p.m. on Friday before returning to the West Campus Courts on Saturday for matches with the University of Illinois-Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The Saturday matches are slated for 9 a.m. against UIC and 1 p.m. for the battle against Wisconsin-Green Bay.
