SAMTB changes mind; votes again

By Darrell Hassler

The mass transit board changed its mind for the third time in two weeks Monday about who they want as the Late Nite Ride Service director.

With a 5-3 vote, the Student Association Mass Transit Board picked Dave Forster over current LNRS Director Sharat Shenoy after publicly interviewing both candidates for five minutes each.

Forster will not be the official director until the University Police give their approval, but the UPs have said they would be satisfied with either Forster or Shenoy.

Last week, SAMTB Executive Director Todd Allen said he wanted to overturn the board’s April 1 decision to give Forster the job, but he said he changed his mind and decided to allow the board to re-interview the candidates.

“As I thought about it more, my responsibility as chairman is to chair the board,” Allen said. “I decided to leave it to the board to make the final decision.”

The mix-up began on March 25 when the board decided they wanted Shenoy to be the LNRS director in a 6-4 vote. However, the vote was taken during a closed meeting.

In an effort to publicize the vote, the board made another show of hands in an open meeting on April 1, but it turned out 7-3 against having Shenoy as the LNRS director.

Because records of the closed meeting vote were not kept, it was unclear who changed their minds.

Allen has repeatedly said he would not take the blame for the confusion because he said picking the LNRS director was the responsibility of the mass transit board.

“I will not take the heat for the board members,” Allen said. “It is up to the board members to take the heat.”

Allen has recently expressed frustration with his board members over their decisions and his inability to have an official say in board voting.

Forster had no comment other than he was glad the confusion was over. Shenoy was not available for comment.

The service offers rides from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
