EDITOR’S NOTE: This video is Part 3 in a series about Greek Life. We have covered the IFC and Panhellenic Greek councils and will cover the Divine Nine.
If you’re looking to connect with fellow NIU students from your culture, joining a multicultural fraternity or sorority is a great way to form bonds.
Unlike the IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities, the Multicultural Greek Council does not have a set recruitment time.
While their recruitment process varies across the organizations, you can begin to get involved with these fraternities and sororities through meeting and talking with members. One way to approach the members is through involvement fairs.
“It’s mostly just, like, getting to know each other, seeing if you really, like, see if you really belong in the organization and if you feel like the organization is the best fit for you,” said Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. President Diego Carmen, a senior mechanical engineering major.
Many of the organizations also have interest forms that interested students can fill out on Instagram.
According to Carmen, having a community of culturally similar friends can help improve the transition to college life.
“It’s a new experience, it’s a new place, and it might be scary, but we have each other to help each other get through those hard moments and also make college fun,” Carmen said. “It’s not just hard work, but also, like, have that, like, place that feels like home away from home, and like that comfortable place where you can just relax and not have to think about, like, just academics.”
