DeKALB – The Student Government Association voted on a resolution to appoint a new chief justice at their meeting Friday.
The SGA meeting occurred at 4 p.m. Friday in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center. Manny Corpuz, speaker of the senate, explained how in the past week he was focused on starting committee centers.
“Over the past week, I was focused on working alongside the executive branch and Deputy Speaker Nathan Gonzalez to start our committee center. Working alongside the treasurer, we were able to start our finance committee so student organizations can start receiving funding,” Corpuz said.
Corpuz encouraged senators to notify student organizations that annual and supplemental funding requests were open to apply.
NOTICE OF ABSENCES
Corpuz explained committee meetings are required for every senator and counted as an absence if they do not attend, and that too many absences can result in removal from office.
In the office of the speaker’s report, Deputy Speaker Nathan Gonzalez further emphasized the importance of attendance and explained that if senators miss a committee meeting, it can be excused depending on the scenario.
“Building off what Speaker Corpuz has mentioned in terms of attendance for the committees, whether it be missing attendance from senatorial committees, depending on what’s your rationale for them, they can be excused. You can download forms by following the link that Speaker Corpuz had emailed about,” Gonzalez said. We have 48 business hours to fill out that form and provide any rationale or any sort of documentation that you might have to go along with that.”
TREASURER UPDATE
SGA Treasurer Ethan Pesavento provided an update on funding. Pesavento shared that he revised the supplemental funding so it matched current bylaws, as they were very outdated from the 2023-2024 academic year.
Pesavento stated that he had his first finance committee meeting where they approved roughly $850 in funding.
Pesavento is now in the process of finding and hiring a deputy treasurer, performing interviews as he receives applications and editing the executive funding allocation form.
NEW RESOLUTIONS/BILLS
SGA brought up SB56002, a resolution to reorganize and update the senate by succession as temporary speaker of the senate, which will be voted on at the next meeting.
The senate then voted on SR56003, a resolution to call upon the supreme court to meet and select a new chief justice, as they currently do not have one. The resolution passed with a vote count of 10-1-2.
The senate discussed SB56003, which is a bill to update and simplify the oversight of organizational requirements. Corpuz explained that the bylaws create conflict with the purchasing guidelines for organizations. The bill will be voted on in two weeks.
SGA senate meetings are open to the public and the next meeting will be 4 p.m. Sept. 27, with the location posted in the senate’s agendas. SGA minutes and intent-to-speak forms are available on Huskie Hub.
