This weekend, annual events such as the DeKalb Corn Classic and STEMFEST return along with a concert to celebrate Latino Heritage Month and a basketball tournament for anyone looking to earn some quick cash.
NIU PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA CONCERT
Date and Time: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27
Location: Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, Music Building
Celebrate Latino Heritage Month with a large ensemble concert led by Director Silas Huff, Assistant Conductor Zihan Zhoh and the NIU School of Music. Tickets are $7 for the general public, $5 for non-NIU students, seniors and staff, and free for NIU students.
Date and Time: check-in begins at 6:45 a.m.; race start times are 8:15 a.m. for 10k runners and 8:30 a.m. for 5k runners, Sunday, Sept. 29
Location: Cuarto Amigos Venue
The DeKalb Corn Classic will take place in downtown DeKalb as runners move through some of the best parts of downtown such as the Kishwaukee River and NIU’s campus. Sign up and registration is required!

Join STEM Fest for its 15th anniversary and check out a variety of activities such as science demonstration shows, interactive activities, expert speakers and more.
BMI ANNUAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Date and Time: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29
Location: Stevenson Courts
The Black Male Initiative will host an annual basketball tournament that is open for all to watch and participate in. Players can enter as a team of five to eight players to win $500 cash. There will also be a three vs. three women’s game to win a smaller cash prize of $200.

Location: Altgeld Hall
This two-day event showcases different types and styles of barbed wire, courtesy of local collectors and collectors from around the country. There will also be an opportunity to learn of the local history and obtain temporary barbed wire inspired tattoos.
