Florists arrange show
April 11, 1991
Proof that spring is finally here can be seen when an annual DeKalb area flower show opens next week.
The Annual Spring Flower Show will be held April 17. The show is sponsored by both the Altrusa Club of DeKalb-Sycamore and Glidden Campus Florist. It will be held at 7 p.m. at the Egyptian Theater, 135 N. Second St.
Four floral designers from Glidden’s will run a demonstration creating floral arrangements. The show will feature a variety of exotic flowers from different parts of the world. Tulips, orchids, lilies, liatris, forsythia and hundreds of other flowers will provide bright and vibrant colors to light up the room.
Oscar Hansen, of Glidden Campus Florist, said about 40 floral arrangements and 60 plants will be given away during the evening. A type of lotto will take place to see who wins. Some arrangements are valued at over $100.00. All the arrangements and plants together are worth over $2,000.00.
Ron Gilbertson, a national commentator, will be the commentator for the evening. He will describe the flowers and the styles as the arrangements are being made. Gilbertson is known nationally for elaborate descriptions of arrangements and styles of flowers.
Linda Fulton, Altrusa Club President, said the proceeds of this fund-raiser will benefit several local charities. This is one of Altrusa’s major fund-raisers that are held to help local needy service projects. Some service projects that are included are literacy programs, the Kishwaukee College Returning Women Scholarship, Sycamore and DeKalb High School Scholarships for a graduating senior and Reading is Fundamental program at the Children’s Learning Center.
Hansen said that the flower show is a “good thing to benefit the community by generating money locally to people that need money and it’s a nice activity in DeKalb that is fun for people to go to.”
Tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased at Glidden Florist, from Altrusa members, and at the door.
