If you’re looking for a good way to get your fill of ghosts, ghouls and ghastly creatures this Halloween season, set your eyes on the silver screen of DeKalb’s historic Egyptian Theatre.
This October, the Egyptian Theatre, located at 135 N. Second St., will host a series of iconic horror movies from the ‘70s and ‘80s as part of their “horror film series.” The selected lineup of films varies from a spooky good time to nail biting thrillers.
With ticket prices ranging from $8 to $10, this would make a great low budget fall outing.
“THEY LIVE” (1988) – 7 P.M. OCT. 1
“They Live” is a classic John Carpenter film, inspired by a short story written by author Ray Nelson. The story follows an average man trying to live a normal life and fit in with society. Unfortunately, after coincidentally acquiring a special pair of sunglasses, he finds himself set to face off against an alien invasion only he can see.
“FRIGHT NIGHT” (1985) – 7 P.M. OCT. 8
After accidentally discovering his neighbor is a vampire, teenage protagonist Charley is put through the wringer. Enlisting the help of his friend Ed, girlfriend Amy and worn out TV host Peter Vincent, the audience follows Charley’s attempts to take down the vampiric threat lurking in his backyard.
“BLACK CHRISTMAS” (1974) – 7 P.M. OCT. 15
A Canadian film, credited as one of the first slasher movies, “Black Christmas” is an icon of holiday horror. The film follows a group of sorority sisters as they work to figure out the identity of a serial killer hidden among them and survive the night. A genre defining film, “Black Christmas” has all the best elements of a slasher contrasted against the cheery backdrop of the Christmas season.
“SUSPIRIA” (1977) – 7 P.M. OCT. 22
This Italian film is iconic in the horror genre for its unique visuals and well-crafted musical score. The audience follows American ballet transfer student, Suzie, as she acclimates to the prestigious dance school she attends. Only after a series of odd deaths occur does she begin to notice and sift through the supernatural secrets of her new home and peers.
“THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW” – 8 P.M. OCT. 25
Although not part of the Egyptian Theatre’s horror film series, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is an icon of all things twisted and alternative in pop culture, a perfect movie for the season. There will be a special live shadow cast of the production with ticket prices at $20. For those unfamiliar, a shadow cast is a live theatrical performance of a film as it’s playing on the big screen, essentially two shows in one! The theater will also sell special kits in the lobby that contain show appropriate props for audience members to use while they watch. This show is for mature audiences only, so if you and some friends are looking for a macabre night of mystery, mayhem and Tim Curry dressed in his Sunday best, you can buy tickets online now.
“THE SHINING” (1980) – 7 P.M. OCT. 30
Stanley Kubrick stunned audiences and critics alike when he released the film adaptation of Stephen King’s book, “The Shining.” After the Torrance family relocates to a remote hotel for the winter months, supernatural and psychological breakdowns ensue. Now Jack, his wife Wendy and their son Danny must try and survive the hotel’s haunted horrors and avoid becoming permanent residents themselves.
