There are more students in the Regency system this spring than last spring.

The Regency system, which includes NIU, Illinois State University in Normal and Sangamon State University in Springfield, saw a 1.7 percent increase this semester in the total number of students it serves compared to the Spring 1990 semester.

The system figures, released in Chancellor Roderick Groves’ March report, show the number of NIU students increased by 2.8 percent, SSU had a 6.8 percent increase and ISU numbers dropped by .4 percent.

The total number of students in the Regency system rose from 48,527 in Spring 1990 to 49,340 students this semester.

NIU has an enrollment of 23,707 students both on and off-campus this spring, compared to 23,057 a year ago.

SSU, an institution for juniors and seniors with a public affairs emphasis, saw enrollment rise from 3,805 last spring to 4,065 this spring.

ISU’s enrollment decreased from 21,665 students last spring to 21,568 students this semester.

ISU is on a five-year, 3,000 student enrollment reduction plan.

The enrollment figures are from early March for each year and may not include classes which began during the final eight weeks of the semester.

NIU’s enrollment increase saw 203 more on-campus students and 447 more off-campus students this spring.

The Regency system’s increase saw 297 more on-campus students and 516 more off-campus students.

However, NIU on-campus graduate students decreased from 4,306 to 4,237.
