DeKALB – At approximately 12:40 a.m. Sunday, in a parking lot on the west side of campus near the NIU Convocation Center, a shooting occurred.
NIU Police and DeKalb Police are actively investigating the shooting but do not believe there is an active threat to the community.
“Northern Illinois University Police and the DeKalb Police Department are investigating a shooting that occurred in a parking lot on the west side of campus at approximately 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Both victims, who are not affiliated with the university, were treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and were released this morning,” according to a university statement.
People have been told to avoid the area while the police investigate the matter, according to a safety warning through the NIU Safe app.
If anyone has information related to the shooting, they are encouraged to report it to the NIU Department of Police and Public Safety, located at 395 Wirtz Drive or the DeKalb Police Department, located at 700 W. Lincoln Highway.
