Springfest rule changed to draw diversity

In an effort to open Springfest ‘91 to more diverse groups, the recreation department will not separate greeks in their own division or allow greek abbreviations in team names.

Pete Adrian, Springfest coordinator, said by changing the bracketing, Springfest should “raise more interest among non-greek organizations” and enable the event to be “more open to everyone.”

The Office of Campus Recreation event is a weeklong series of competitive athletic and recreational activities. The events will be played April 15 through April 27.

Debbie Owens, intrarmural sports coordinator, said the new change could “either be taken negatively or positively.”

The participating groups will be divided into two rosters. Division I is for groups entering two rosters. The two rosters will compete against each other as well as against other groups.

Division II is for groups entering only one roster. The divisions will not compete against each other.

Springfest will feature two new activities—ultimate frisbee and walleyball. Springfest will not have soccer this year, as in the past.

“We tried to keep most of the popular sports, softball and volleyball, and thought that we needed more of a variety of activities,” Owens said.

Other activities will include 16-inch softball, volleyball, a bike race, bed races, human pyramid building and a tricycle race.

Another popular activity being held again this year is the Springtree Runs. There will be two held, the 10K and 3K races. Unlike the other activities, the runs are open to anyone who wants to participate.

Owens said generally 300 people participate in the races each year.

Springfest entries are available now through April 5 at the main desk of the Recreation Center. Schedules of playing times will be determined April 10.

Springfest is only open to NIU students who have paid an activity fee for the current semester. Any student who has received a varsity letter or is receiving a partial or full grant for a varsity sport is ineligible to play.
