In his first game with substantial playing time, NIU football freshman running back Telly Johnson Jr. scored 2 rushing touchdowns, earning this week’s Huskie of the Week Award.
The Huskies rallied behind Johnson, as he totaled 141 rushing yards in NIU’s 42-28 victory over the Western Michigan University Broncos on Wednesday.
Johnson found the endzone first in the beginning of the second quarter, equalizing the game at 7 with a 6-yard rushing touchdown.
Johnson’s second rushing touchdown was the final blow for NIU, giving the Huskies a 42-21 lead late in the fourth quarter. The scoring-rush went 26-yards up the middle, with Johnson stiff-arming a defender on his way to the endzone.
Just before the 2-minute warning, Johnson rushed for 13-yards, giving NIU a game-sealing first down. The first down allowed redshirt junior quarterback Ethan Hampton to kneel the clock away.
Johnson and the Huskies return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday against the University of Akron at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb. The game will be aired on CBS Sports Network and live stats will be provided by SIDEARM Sports.
Next week’s Huskie of the Week will be announced Nov. 18.
The Northern Star sports section’s Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were chosen based on their weekly performance in competitions taking place from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11.
