DeKALB – As of Nov. 4, demolition of the Hopkins Pool, located at 1403 Sycamore Road, is set to occur in mid-November. The Hopkins Pool Renovation Project will provide new recreational features and upgraded facilities to the pool.
The DeKalb Park District at the Board of Commissioners Sept. 26 meeting approved proceeding with a leisure pool option. The leisure pool option will provide new features such as a new spray ground, water slides and an expanded concessions area with seating.
The new pool design will also include lifeguard and first aid spaces, improved infrastructure and new locker rooms.
Contractors will start the demolition of the pool by installing silt and construction fences around the current pool area and part of the north parking lot while they work on the project, according to the DeKalb Park District website.
Due to the construction of the pool, the seasonal ice rink in the north parking lot will not open this winter, according to a press release.
The DeKalb Park District is partnered with the Larson & Darby Group for this project.
The finalization of the construction drawings is tentatively expected to be completed by mid-January 2025. Once the blueprints are completed, they will be submitted to the Illinois Department of Public Health for approval. Once approved, new construction will begin in the summer of 2025, with the goal being to open the new renovated pool for use in the summer of 2026, according to the press release.
The project is estimated to cost between $12-$14 million and will be funded by the existing capital fund balance, funds from the 2025 and 2026 budget years and $9.5 million that was issued from alternate bonds, according to the DeKalb Park District website.
