DeKalb shaken by fierce storms

People in DeKalb scratched their heads Wednesday as the area was hit again with the freakish and unstable weather that marked the past two weeks.

Last week saw rain, snow and hail. Temperatures ranged from 27 degrees March 20, to 78 degrees last Tuesday.

Weather Wednesday varied much the way it did the entire week, with temperatures ranging from 72 degrees to 50 degrees. Much of the day was sunny, but rain did come hard and quick. The total was 1.87 inches.

Wednesday seemed to be a climax day for the weather, as numerous warnings and reports were made by the National Weather Service. The first warning was for a severe thunderstorm, then later in the day a tornado watch was sent out which lasted until 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

Dale Helgerson of the Rockford Weather Service said they received many reports of severe weather all day.

Funnel clouds were reported from every corner of the state, Helgerson said.

ail, which often accompanies tornados, was also reported throughout the state. The Greater Rockford Airport reported three-quarters of an inch of hail, said Helgerson. DeKalb was pelted with pea-sized hail Wednesday afternoon.

There were wind gusts of up to 46 miles per hour, said Helgerson.

The unstable weather was caused by “warm moist air, which was followed by a cold front, making conditions ideal for a tornado,” Helgerson said. He said the severe weather would pass as the cold front moved out.
