DeKALB – At 11:55 p.m., Monday, DeKalb police, fire and ambulance received a call about a fire at University Plaza, off-campus student apartments, located at 900 Crane Drive.
All of DeKalb fire responded to the call, which included three stations along with ambulances.
Mike Thomas, DeKalb fire chief, explained how the fire was caused.
“It came in as a fire alarm, and then a bystander called saying they could see flames in a window. So our guys, our crews, arrived, and did find the fire alarm had been activated, went up to the suspected floor of origin, and they were only able to find a detector had tripped, and they had a smell of smoke,” Thomas said. “So after further investigation, they found burnt food. So there was no real structure fire or anything.”
There was only a bit of smoke, and it was released through natural ventilation.
There were no injuries to anyone and no damage to any property. Nobody was displaced and the fire was not extensive.
