Burglary rash hits city’s businesses
March 27, 1991
Burglars stole cash and destroyed property at six businesses on the East Side of DeKalb sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning, DeKalb Police said.
“All of these burglaries are probably related,” said DeKalb Police Lt. Dick Moudy.
The burglars broke into the east drive-up window of Big Ray’s Silverfross Drive-in, 1420 E. Lincoln Hwy., and stole $35 from a cash box, police said. A freezer door was left open and $260 of food spoiled, police said.
Although the burglars stole only $7.80 in coins from Whitman’s Catering, 1503 E. Lincoln Hwy., they caused $900 in damage to the building while trying to get in, police said.
Cash was stolen from Berkes Kitchen and Millwork, 1228 E. Lincoln Hwy., and DeKalb Distributing Company, 1224 E. Lincoln Hwy., and the burglars rummaged through desks and cabinets at the two businesses, police said.
Nothing was missing from Bev’s Cafe, 1302 E. Lincoln Hwy., but $10 in property was destroyed when the burglars entered the building through a small window on the west side of the restaurant, police said.
The Moose Home, 1231 E. Lincoln Hwy., was hit in the rash of burglaries, but the police report was not completed, Moudy said. A larger amount of cash was stolen from the building, he said.
Although police don’t know if the break-ins happened during Monday night’s heavy rain storm, the bad weather might have helped the burglars escape detection by patrolling police, Moudy said. However, police did not find a lot of mud tracked in the burglarized buildings, he said.
The amount of damage done to enter the buildings was slight, Moudy said, and the entrance points were concealed. These two facts might have kept the burglaries from being discovered while in progress, he said.
