Wreckroom DeKalb had its hard launch opening earlier this month with the mission of being a more inclusive spot for local families to de-stress.
Wreckroom DeKalb, located at 901 Lucinda Ave., Unit G, is open Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Prices start at $60 for 30 minutes in the rage room for one to two people and $60 for 30 minutes in the splatter room for one to four people.
The amusement center has four hubs, including a rage room, a splatter room, an arcade and an entertainment center.
“We wanted to provide a space that was totally inclusive for age, gender, whatever you prefer,” said Miles Mapes, managing partner for Wreckroom DeKalb.
The space includes a wreck room which gives visitors the opportunity to break and smash as many breakables as they want.
“In there, you get 30 minutes and a box of breakables, plus whatever you want to buy,” Mapes said. “And you get to smash and throw and bang to your heart’s content.”
Customers also have the option of filling a box of their own belongings to destroy.
“What we do is we fill one of our boxes, our boxes hold, on average, about 20 items,” Mapes said. “You can bring whatever you’d like as long as it is your personal property.”
If someone needs a creative outlet, they can always engage with the splatter room. The splatter room is bright and colorful, but always gives the opportunity for visitors to add more to the painted walls.
“You get 30 minutes, four colors, a canvas and all the fun you want to have in that,” said Mapes. “We’ve got complimentary squirt guns in there and foam balls to throw the paint. We even set a little faux living room in there. People have already taken very quickly to painting that as well.”
For both experiences, visitors need to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Wreckroom provides a jacket, headgear and gloves. It is recommended to wear a lighter shirt under the jacket.
Along with the experiential rooms, Wreckroom DeKalb has 30 arcade games and prize cabinets with a mix of games including racing games, air hockey and pinball.
For vintage gamers, the amusement center holds a lounge for retro gaming with several old-school game consoles such as the GameCube, the Sega Genesis and the N64.
If gamers want a fun snack or drink during their experience, Wreckroom has them covered.
“Exotic and unique snacks are pretty popular in the gaming community,” said Mapes. “That was something we wanted to bring in as a unique option. We’ve got about 50 varieties of exotic unique sodas and about 30 varieties of exotic, unique snacks.”
Mapes said the snacks are from countries such as Thailand and Japan. They are domestic brands, but they are foreign counterparts. Wreckroom DeKalb will have chips like garlic steak doritos and mango sodas.
A few weeks after opening, Mapes has already begun to see some regulars.
“It’s been a really nice blend of people from all over the place, as well as a lot of families too,” Mapes said.
