DeKALB — The Punk Rock Club, Economic Student Association, National Pre-Med Association, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the English Teaching Licensure Club were all in attendance at the Oasis area of the Holmes Student Center. Thursday SGA held its first DIscover Your Pack event for new organizations recognized this semester to get the word out about their club and organization.
SGA Deputy Speaker Nathan Gonzalez, one of the event organizers, talked about the event saying it’s a way for newly confirmed student organizations that were approved this semester and were not able to be in the involvement fair to connect with the people of NIU and let them know that they exist.
This is the first time SGA held the Discover Your Pack event, but Gonzalez said they plan to have more in the future.
Daniel Vantilburg, a senior economics major, tabled for the Economic Student Association, talked about why he came to the event.
“In prior years, after COVID, we got the boot because we didn’t fill out our form (to be recognized by SGA). So this year we finally got back into being an officially recognized organization. I’ve just been saying yes to anything that Student Government says so that I can show up and make sure that we get more people to show up,” Vantilburg said.
Vantilburg also talked about how effective he felt the event was at getting the word out about the newly recognized clubs.
“I’ve taken two ZID’s so far. So, I mean, my organization’s got around 30 emails, that’s almost a 10% increase on my email list. So that’s great,” Vantilburg said.
Emanuel Guillen, a first-year psychology major and president of the Punk Rock Club, talked about how he felt about the event and if it works at getting the word out.
So far, I’ve really enjoyed it. I mean, there’s a lot of really, really cool people. I feel like it’s in a pretty well-oriented place,” Guillen said. “I mean, we went from having three people to like 30. That’s HuskieHub members but it still gets the point out, you know? It still gets people to join, people to come to events.”
