Spider-Man has starred in 10 television series, such as “The Spectacular Spider-Man” in 2008, “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” in 1994, and “Ultimate Spider-Man” in 2012, revolving around him. This number will soon rise to 11 with Disney+’s new series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”
“Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is slated to have 10 episodes, with the first two releasing Jan. 29 and each episode following releasing weekly on Disney+.
The style of the new series looks straight out of the silver era of comics, complete with Peter Parker’s comic book-accurate design and Norman Osborn’s signature slicked-back curly hair. Comic panels are used on screen to split shots and give the viewer the feeling of looking at a comic book.
The collection of characters announced is massive and diverse with familiar characters like Harry Osborn and Aunt May and lesser-known characters comic book fans would recognize like fire-themed villain Butane and Nico Minoru, a member of the Runaways.
The characters seem to take inspiration from both the comics and their MCU counterparts. Spider-Man has a black and white costume that bears a striking resemblance to his Future Foundation suit from the comic “Amazing Spider-Man #658” in 2011 and Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil from “Daredevil,” “The Defenders,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.”
The series seems to be centered on Spider-Man’s early beginnings as a superhero, hence why we see Parker attending Midtown High as well as wearing the homemade spider-suit, complete with exterior web-shooters.
Norman Osborn will act as Parker’s mentor figure but given that he’s also the villain known as the Green Goblin, one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes, this creates an interesting conflict. There’s also speculation that the series will take place outside the MCU, a move the prior series “X-Men ‘97” pulled off excellently.
It’ll be refreshing to have another standalone series where Spider-Man swings into action once again.
