UC control is not unjustified

Bullseye.

Associate Legal Council Norden Gilbert has found the mark in the NIU Student Judicial Code confusion.

The University Council has sent a proposal into a committee that if passed would allow it to control the code. However, the UC has fewer students on it than the University Judicial Advisory Board, which currently controls the code.

“The system we have now works so well, so I question any attempts to tamper with that,” Gilbert said. “I haven’t seen any justification for changing them.”

The push for the UC’s control of the code should be questioned. There’s no legitimate reason for giving the UC the reigns to the code.

Additionally, the UC members have had little experience with student legal aspects except in regards to academic misconduct which is only a small portion of what the board does.

UC control of the code would only give too much responsibility to a group that doesn’t have enough knowledge in the subject to handle it. And this would lead to members asking for judicial advice from someone with the experience.

Also, students on the UC opposed the proposal. If the council committee approves the proposal, it will show again students have little say in what affects them directly at NIU.

Students cannot afford the UC getting control of the code. The less students are allowed input into the system, the less chance they have of getting fair legal representation.
