Police investigate indecent exposer
February 8, 1991
A man is walking around NIU and exposing himself, University Police said.
According to UP reports, a woman was in front of the north doors of the Visual Arts Building Tuesday at 7:38 p.m. when she saw a man masturbating with his pants unzipped, said UP Sgt. Ralph Taylor.
Police reports state the offender asked the victim, “You don’t mind, do you?” The victim just walked away, Taylor said.
Taylor said the woman gave UPs a description of a 5-foot-10-inch, 40_year-old white male with “salt and pepper” hair and beard.
Reports showed the offender made no attempt to touch or harm the victim, Taylor said.
Less than an hour later, a group of people were dancing in the southeast corner of Anderson Hall, Studio B dancing room at 8:30 p.m. when they noticed a man through the glass doors standing outside the building masturbating, he said.
Taylor said he does not know yet if the two incidents are related because the dancers in Anderson Hall could not get a good look at the offender before he fled the scene.
Taylor said he is not sure what exactly has caused these incidents and does not know if the warm weather has anything to do with either of them.
“The last time we had this happen, it was in DuSable and the Psych/Math Building. I have no idea if the incidents are related to each other,” Taylor said.
DeKalb Police Lt. Dick Moudy said the case is being handled by the university and so far the DeKalb police have not been involved in the situation.
A composite of the suspect is being drawn by an assistant from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department using the description from the first witness. UPs say it will be ready to print by Monday.
