DeKALB – Students at NIU’s involvement fair connected with each other to meet new student organizations and find out how to join.
NIU’s Spring Involvement Fair took place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student Center on Wednesday and Thursday.
Shannon Burke, a junior nursing major and vice president of communications of NIU’s Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, explained what she shares with prospective students during the fair.
“One thing I really like to talk about is our philanthropies,” Burke said. “Our philanthropies are the Special Olympics and Girls on the Run. I just love getting to talk about that.”
Different organizations presenting at the fair shared similar goals when talking to students. Each organization is different, but they all have a common goal of making themselves known to students around NIU.
Elitzia Ocasio, a junior psychology major and president of the Student Psychological Association at NIU wants to make her club familiar to students.
“I definitely just want to make it [The Student Psychological Association] known. I feel like it’s not widely known around campus, so definitely recruit and kind of put the name out there just so people know that it’s an option,” Ocasio said.
For students attending the involvement fair, some of the clubs served as a gateway to socialization and meeting new people.
With the wide range of organizations represented at the fair, students have various ways of remembering which tables they have already looked into.
Mykari Dozier, sophomore fashion merchandising major, said, “I visited the NIU involvement page and they have a map so I have just been looking at that,” Dozier said. “I look for each table I like, and fliers which have content and contact information. I also sign up for things so they can contact me.”
