DeKALB – A Democrat who ran for DeKalb County state’s attorney in the past election was hired to be NIU’s new Students’ Legal Assistance attorney.
Charles “Chuck” Rose, an NIU Law alum, former Sycamore lawyer and police officer was hired by NIU Students’ Legal Assistance (SLA) as their new attorney.
Rose is replacing Joseph Lovelace who ended his work as the NIU SLA attorney on Nov. 30. Jeanne Meyer has been the replacement for Lovelace but was only on an interim basis. She is expected to end her work at the end of January.
Rose ran to be DeKalb County state’s attorney in the 2024 election on Nov. 5, but lost to Republican Riley Oncken who is also an NIU Law alum.
Rose has a private law practice in Sycamore where he specializes in representing those with disabilities. He has worked as a prosecutor for DeKalb and Jo Daviess counties. He has worked as a part-time police officer for Village of Waterman and the Genoa Police Department, where he worked on the North Central Narcotics Task Force.
Rose has his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado and his law degree from NIU’s College of Law. Rose taught criminal justice at Kishwaukee College for over 20 years, as well as served on the school’s criminal justice advisory board.
Rose served on the DeKalb County Regional Board of School Trustees and a variety of other boards. Some examples are Youth Services Bureau, Elder Care Services and the DeKalb County Mental Health Board.
Rose will serve as the director of the Legal assistance center on an interim basis starting Feb. 1.
