DeKALB – The Student Government Association elected five new senators and changed requirements to increase student representation at its meeting on Friday.
SGA ELECTS FIVE NEW SENATORS
The Student Government Association came to a resolution to confirm five senators, Jacob Woodson, Sky Boniecki, Steve Robinson, Nico Ramirez and Nathan Meister, at their 56th session.
Each new member of the SGA senate has to meet the necessary requirements to be appointed.
Ramirez, a sophomore political science major, shared with the SGA prior experience he has relating to government.
“I have worked with a senator and had an internship before,” Ramirez said. “I have worked on lots of legislation and bills, I have also helped pass many bills. I believe I will be a great fit for the SGA senate. I have worked for the 38th district of Illinois and passed lots of Illinois laws.”
BILL TO ESTABLISH INTERNATIONAL SENATE REPRESENTATIVE
The SGA passed a bill that requires two senate seats to be filled by international students.
Requirements for seats on the senate attempt to be representative of NIU’s student body, with other requirements such as a seat for a graduate student, seats from students that represent underserved communities and a seat for a student from each respective college.
After voting on SB56015, the bill to have an international representative passed.
CAMPUS LIFE AND ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
SGA passed a bill to reform the campus and environmental affairs committee. The revisions require the student government to hold an annual campus sustainability week and requires members to attend an environmental literacy program.
