DeKALB – Students were asked to relocate from Stevenson Towers Residence Hall to the Holmes Student Center Hotel for the weekend to speed up the drying process in the affected areas of the building because of flooding that happened last week.
On the morning of Jan. 21, students were forced to evacuate Stevenson Tower B Residence Hall. A sprinkler pipe burst, causing the fire alarm to go off. Students have since been able to return to their rooms.
Moisture levels at Stevenson Tower B have slowly been dropping since the residence hall flooded. However, the school plans to relocate students in highly affected areas and increase the temperatures on those floors as well as add more fans to speed up the drying process and decrease moisture levels.
The office of Housing and Residential Services sent out an email stating that some students in the affected areas, specifically those residing on the seventh, eighth, and ninth floors of Stevenson Tower B will be asked to relocate for the weekend to the Holmes Student Center Hotel to increase temperatures on those floors.
Costs for the temporary relocation will be covered by the school. Relocated students will be able to check in at the hotel on Friday afternoon and are scheduled to check out Monday morning at 11 a.m.
Relocated students with roommates will share the same hotel room. Students with single rooms will receive a hotel room to themselves. Throughout the weekend, students will be allowed to enter their rooms to retrieve any necessary items. More information will be sent to students who have been asked to relocate on Friday morning.
The office of Housing and Residential Services advises students with affected rooms to keep windows closed to prevent more moisture from entering the building as well as keeping their personal fans on to aid in speeding up the drying process.
Students can contact Tim Trottier, associate director of Housing and Residential Services with any additional questions.
