IFC: No NIU ban on Rush

NIU’s Interfraternity Council does not want the Office of Student Affairs to have the ability to levy Rush restrictions on its fraternities.

IFC President Steve Sliga said the IFC passed a resolution Jan. 27 on Rush restrictions which will be given tonight to Donald Buckner, vice president of Student Affairs.

The resolution states, “Restrictions on Rush, when used for disciplinary purposes, are neither educational nor developmental and therefore are not an acceptable sanction for men’s fraternities.”

Instead, the IFC feels the fraternities should “work together” to determine punishments for its members when they need discipline, Sliga said.

“It’s been in the past that if there is a chance a fraternity will ruin the reputation of the university, the university has the right to remove its Rush,” said Sliga. “We don’t feel they (the restrictions) are beneficial to us.”

The most recent case came last semester when the Rush rights of Phi Kappa Sigma were taken away by the university, he said.

Because the university works on a “case-by-case basis,” there is no definite method of sanctioning for any fraternity for any incident, he said.

“The university has the ultimate decision,” Sliga said. “We just hope they do not do it (impose restrictions) in the future.”
