After being named the Mid-American Conference Co-Singles Player of the Week and defeating an opponent from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, NIU women’s tennis freshman Lucia Yecora has been named the Northern Star’s Huskie of the Week.
In the first match on Friday, Yecora came back from a 6-3 first set loss against University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sophomore Emilia Durska. Yecora won a 6-4 second set before the match was ruled unfinished when the Huskies clinched a 4-0 win.
Later in the day, Yecora won the only point for the Huskies against the University of Wisconsin-Madison, avoiding the sweep in NIU’s 6-1 loss. After losing a 7-5 first set against sophomore Ellison Reynoldson, Yecora took a 6-4 second set. In a dominant performance, Yecora won a 10-3 set for the victory.
This is Yecora’s first career Huskie of the Week and her first MAC honor. This is the second time a women’s tennis player has been named Huskie of the Week, after junior Nataly Ninova on Jan. 20.
NIU women’s tennis plays its next match at 10 a.m. Saturday at Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House against the Western Illinois University Bulldogs.
Next week’s Huskie of the Week will be announced Feb. 10.
The Northern Star sports section’s Huskie of the Week is voted for on a weekly basis. Student-athletes considered for this week’s edition were selected based on their performance in competitions taking place Jan. 27 to Feb. 2.
