Tensions and stakes rise in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” as the series continues and critical events occur in the story.
Episodes 2 through 8 have put Peter Parker in nerve-wracking and rewarding situations as he tries to balance his school life, internship at Oscorp and role as Spider-Man.
The second episode, “The Parker Luck,” alludes to the string of bad luck Peter has, whether related to his time as Spider-Man or not. So much of said luck is on display with leaving his best friend at a party, feeling out of place amidst the other Oscorp interns and almost getting burned by fire-themed villain Butane and his gauntlets.
The episode’s ending is the nail in Peter’s coffin of bad luck as Norman Osborn finds out Peter is Spider-Man through security camera footage in a stairwell.
Easter eggs in the episode include the three other interns and two scientists working at Oscorp having their own personas in the comics.
The three interns, Jeanne Foucalt, Amadeus Cho and Asha are connected to the next generation of superheroes.
Jeanne, better known as Finesse, is known for her exceptional intelligence and ability to copy moves.
Amadeus is a friend of the Hulk, not unlike Rick Jones, and is known for being one of the smartest people in the world who would later become the “Totally Awesome Hulk.”
Asha comes from Wakanda, home of the Black Panther, and is enrolled in the Wakandan School for Alternative Studies.
The scientists, Dr. Bentley Wittman and Dr. Carla Conners, who is a female version of Curt Conners, serve as the alter ego to the supervillains, “The Wizard” and “The Lizard.”
Episode 3, titled “Secret Identity Crisis,” has Norman surprisingly delighted that Peter is Spider-Man as the businessman wants to help. Usually when Norman knows Spider-Man’s identity in any media, it’s a way for him to attack the hero. Norman acts as Peter’s informant as he battles James Sanders and Maria Vasquez, a criminal couple with equipment bearing a symbol identical to Butane’s gauntlets.
Peter’s not the only one dealing with criminals, however, as Lonnie Lincoln, known for his alter ego as the gangster “Tombstone,” discovers his younger brother is working for the 110th Street Gang led by Big Donovan.
Lonnie saves his brother by taking his place. The act may seem like a good gesture, but it leads Lonnie down a dark road that will negatively affect him and the people around him.
Episode 4, “Hitting the Big Time,” features Peter testing three Spider-Man suits which all fail in some capacity before settling on a black and white suit, which appears similar to his Future Foundation suit in the comics. The only downside is after Peter tells Norman that he loves the suit, he accidentally reveals his identity to Norman’s son Harry, seen earlier in Episode 1 as the person getting mugged.
This is the first time Harry knows who Spider-Man is before he takes up his father’s mantle as the Green Goblin.
Meanwhile, Lonnie struggles with being a part of the 110th Street Gang as he runs into a rival gang called the Scorpions and falls deeper into their web. Big Donovan assures Lonnie he won’t be treated like a joke as long as he proves his loyalty to the 110th.
In Episode 5, “The Unicorn Unleashed!,” Peter and Nico Minoru’s friendship struggle as Peter spends more time with Harry.
The inventor of the enhancements for the past episodes is revealed to be Doctor Otto Octavius, better known as Doctor Octopus.
A gang war between the 110th Street Gang and the Scorpions break out, where Lonnie saves Big Don from an attack from the Scorpion’s leader, Mac Gargan.
After the fight, Lonnie is given his iconic and soon-to-be villain moniker, “Tombstone,” and becomes an official member of the 110th Street Gang.
In the sixth episode “Duel With the Devil,” secrets are uncovered as Nico learns that Peter is Spider-Man. One of the standout moments was the fight between Spider-Man and Daredevil, who hints that Norman may not be as good-natured as he seems.
The fight is stunning, especially with the two heroes’ costumes contrasting under the light of the moon. The animation works wonders in the scene because it feels like a panel one would see in a comic book.
Character progression is seen in Episode 7 “Scorpion Rising” where Nico and Harry become friends and Spider-Man suffers his first brutal defeat by the hands of Mac and his scorpion suit.
A fun detail to point out is that Spider-Man is saved by a glider sent by Norman which is meant to allude to the Green Goblin’s own glider, one where Norman may use in the future.
“A Tangled Web,” the eighth episode, lives up to its name as Peter feels the weight he has to bear. By the end, he is confident thanks to Harry along with a new red and blue suit. As an added bonus, Iron Man appears as a cameo when he apprehends Otto Octavius otherwise known as Doctor Octopus.
The show has only a few episodes left to the season and with so much to cover, some issues may occur later. Hopefully the show can stick the landing as well as Spider-Man sticks to walls. The episodes release on Wednesday the 19th and are available to watch on Disney+.
