DeKALB – The Student Government Association (SGA) confirmed two new senators, finalized a stipend for the board of elections and established an ad hoc, or temporary, committee focused on transportation at their meeting Friday.
RESOLUTION TO CONFIRM TWO NEW SENATORS
SGA passed a resolution to confirm two new senators, Nick Obabko and Eric Zimmer.
Obabko, a senior political science major with minors in history, political studies and a certificate in criminology, transferred from McHenry County College where he earned a certificate in paralegal studies and an associate’s in applied paralegal sciences.
“My goal is to improve the connection between the student body, student life and student senate,” Obabko said. “I want to make things better, make sure students get the best out of their experience at the university, and that the university in turn is improving student life and meeting the expectations of the student body and community.”
Obabko previously served on club council as well as student government during his time at McHenry.
Obabko was confirmed as a senator with a vote of 9-3-1.
Zimmer, a junior electrical engineering major, shared some of his goals as a senator.
“I want to work closely with student organizations to understand their needs and to help them secure the resources and support they need to be successful,” said Zimmer. “Additionally, I want to focus on student attendance at NIU athletic events.”
Zimmer was confirmed as a senator with a vote of 10-2-1.
RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH AD HOC COMMITTEE FOR TRANSPORTATION
SGA passed a resolution to establish an ad hoc committee focused on improving transportation at NIU.
The committee is focused on improving transportation for the NIU public and informing students about how and when to report issues, upcoming projects and updates.
“Sometimes the news doesn’t reach the student body and information like how and when to report an issue on Huskie Line, for instance, is a bit murky,” wrote Deputy Speaker Nathan Gonzalez in his proposal.
SGA did not discuss any specific changes or improvements the committee will be making to NIU’s transportation itself.
The committee will last until the end of the senate’s 57th session but can be renewed.
The resolution, SR56033, was passed with a vote of 12-0-1.
RESOLUTION TO FINALIZE BOARD OF ELECTIONS STIPEND
SGA passed a resolution to finalize the stipend of $1,650 received by the board of elections after the election season.
The reasoning behind the stipend is to further incentivize the work being done by members of the board during each election cycle.
The resolution passed with a vote of 8-0-5.
