Correction: “SGA passed a bill to introduce executive orders for President Ja’Kobe Jones.” was changed to “SGA passed a bill to introduce executive orders for future presidential administrations.” on Sunday, March 16.
The Student Government Association (SGA) passed a bill to introduce executive orders, passed a bill to update the responsibilities of the speaker and passed a resolution to confirm Damian Hepburn as the director of athletics at their meeting on Friday.
BILL TO INTRODUCE EXECUTIVE ORDERS
SGA passed a bill to introduce executive orders for future presidential administrations.
“This bill will provide a binding way to discipline members of the president’s staff as well as create instructions for the direction and mission of their administration,” wrote Deputy Speaker Nathan Gonzalez in a report read to the senate.
Any executive orders made by the president will only affect the executive branch and remain in effect for the duration of the presidential administration they are ordered in.
The bill passed with a vote count of 13-0-0 and will go into effect at the beginning of the fall 2025 semester.
BILL TO UPDATE THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE SPEAKER
SGA passed a bill to update the responsibilities and duties of the senate speaker.
Senate Speaker Manny Corpuz introduced the bill to solidify responsibilities that were informally passed on to him by the previous speaker.
“This just solidifies and codifies that the speaker has these responsibilities to make sure that the operating manual is correct and updated, as well as to have the power to remove people from committees,” said Corpuz.
The bill passed with a vote count of 12-0-1.
RESOLUTION TO CONFIRM DIRECTOR FOR ATHLETICS
SGA passed a resolution to confirm sophomore sports management major Hepburn as the director of athletics.
“Fostering a sense of community and unity on campus throughout athletics is my biggest goal,” said Hepburn.
Hepburn explained to the senate that he hopes to provide more opportunities for students to meet and interact with players.
“I want to be that person to bridge the gap between the athletics department and the community,” Hepburn said.
Hepburn also explained that he plans to get more students to go to away games.
“We’re incentivising students to actually travel to a road game and actually have a student section at an away crowd,” Hepburn said. “As we travel to these other schools you might see about four or five people wearing NIU shirts and a crowd full of the opposing team.”
Hepburn was confirmed with a vote count of 12-1-0.
