Thief walks off with CDs, guitar at weekend party
February 12, 1991
Someone stole a customized guitar and 90 compact discs valued at $1,590 from an NIU fraternity house Sunday, DeKalb Police said.
Sigma Nu president Steve Sliga, 22, had the $690 iridescent, blue and purple Kramer Pace guitar and the $900 CDs stolen from his room at the house, 914 Greenbrier Road.
Sliga said he thought the thief was one of the 150 to 200 people who attended a party Saturday at the fraternity.
“It’s happened before. Last year, some stuff was stolen at a party we had,” Sliga said.
To thwart thieves, fraternity members blocked off the entrances to the upstairs rooms to direct guests to the basement where the party was held, Sliga said.
One of the back entrances to the house was left open, and Sliga said he thinks the thief came through it. Sliga’s door was found jammed open, he said.
Sliga was working as the party’s disc jockey in the basement when the burglary happened, he said.
Students who have big parties at home should be careful, said DeKalb Police Lt. Dick Moudy. “If you have a number of people you don’t know at a party, you are inviting stuff to be stolen,” he said.
Moudy said he advised student party-givers to lock the doors to their rooms to secure their property.
“We’re going to take measures. We’re going to make sure we lock doors and we decided leaving rooms open is a no-no,” Sliga said.
