NIU wrestling competed in the final day of the Mid-American Conference championship on Saturday in Trenton, New Jersey, after having five wrestlers advance to the second day of competition.
WEST SHINES BRIGHTEST
NIU redshirt junior Blake West became NIU’s first 125 pound MAC champion in 18 years on Saturday.
West matched up against Clarion University freshman Travis Clawson in the finals of the MAC Tournament. West pushed the pressure against Clawson and outwrestled him to a 13-2 majority decision.
In the MAC tournament West outscored his opponents 29-2, only surrendering points in the final matchup.
West’s victory is another milestone in a historic season and qualifies him for the NCAA tournament which starts March 20 and concludes March 22.
West accomplished one of his preseason goals by becoming king of the MAC at 125 pounds and looks to make good on his second goal by winning the NCAA tournament.
JOHNSON PUTS IN STRONG EFFORT
NIU redshirt sophomore Landen Johnson also had a strong showing in the MAC tournament.
Johnson claimed the 3rd place spot at 157 pounds, winning four of his five matchups throughout the tournament.
In the third place dual, Johnson matched up Edinboro University -fifth year Ryan Burgos. Johnson outpointed Burgos in a 12-6 decision win to lock up his podium placement.
With his podium finish, Johnson has also qualified for the NCAA tournament and will compete for the national championship at 157 pounds.
