Cheers not just for players

At the final three games of the basketball season, NIU’s Huskie Spirit Council will show support for the troops in Desert Storm as well as the teams.
“We decided as a council to support the troops since they support us,” said Laura Fischer, coordinator of the Huskie Spirit Council. “We want to show our support as a student organization.”
The council will engage in a number of activities at the remaining men’s and women’s basketball games to enable spectators to show troop support.
“To begin with, a yellow ribbon will be given at the door to all spectators entering the game,” Fischer said.
The council also is urging spectators to bring in the names and addresses of friends and relatives in the Gulf, Fischer said. These names will be compiled to encourage people to write, she said.
Fischer said the list will be available in the Promotions and Marketing Office of the Athletic Department.
Donations will also be taken by the council at the games, Fischer said. “The money will partially be used to pay postage if people decide to write. The rest of it will be given to the Red Cross.”
