Pets have provided valuable companionship for humans for hundreds of years. In fact, two-thirds of American families owned a pet in 2023.
Which type of pet is your favorite?
DOGS
Otherwise known as man’s best friend, dogs are the most popular pet in the U.S. Loyal and playful, dogs will make sure you never feel alone.
Aside from bringing joy to humans, dogs are widely used in other roles, such as the military, law enforcement or guiding blind owners.
CATS
Cats, another widely popular pet, require lower maintenance compared to dogs and don’t need to be walked constantly. Their playful and curious nature is endearing, and their small size, soft fur and relaxing purring make them wonderful cuddle buddies.
On the practical side, cats are also great for pest control as they hunt wild mice and rats.
RABBITS
Floppy ears and fluffy bodies make rabbits some of the cutest animals on Earth and very appealing pets. Every bit as affectionate as cats and dogs, rabbits are also quiet animals, so there is little need to worry about them waking you up at night.
BIRDS
Even lower maintenance than cats, birds also require very little living space. They are intelligent and affectionate, and their colorful feathers make them beautiful companions.
Depending on the kind of bird, you can even teach them to speak and repeat phrases.
FISH
Fish are quite possibly the easiest pet to take care of. They can’t make your house dirty, they don’t require much attention and they only take up as much space as their aquarium.
Fish are also cheap, quiet and relaxing to watch. Their aquariums also work well as decor.
OTHER
There are many other animals out there that can be kept as pets: Hamsters, rats, snakes, lizards, horses, ducks, chickens, hermit crabs, ants and more. They all have different appeals and requirements.
