The NIU Fiber Arts club is a recently formed organization that deals with a wide variety of fiber arts.
Holding their first meeting on Mar. 6, the Fiber Arts club strives to create a supportive community, help develop skills, share materials and make a positive impact on campus.
The practice of fiber arts refers to any art that uses materials such as textiles and practices the art of sewing, crochet, knitting, embroidery, felting, weaving and more.
Vincent Bratcher, a first-year political science major and president of the Fiber Arts club, was proud to see how the club came together so soon after it was formed.
“My life philosophy is just to build community and to build a tiny little community just in my freshman year, it’s pretty incredible,” Bratcher said. “It really is all about connections.”
Club members will be given access to a growing collection of materials and resources related to their crafts and projects as well as receive advice from experts to push their skills to further heights.
Newcomers can also receive support from their mentors and fellow club members as well as build connections with their peers.
Desteney Garcia, a first-year education major and vice president of the Fiber Arts club, welcomed those who aren’t familiar with the practice.
“We’re very open to new beginners and stuff,” Garcia said. “Starting a new hobby can be very intimidating, especially when it comes to how much the things and materials cost and stuff. That’s why we kind of have the club. That way we can help others explore that interest and stuff.”
The Fiber Arts club meets from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Thursday in Reavis Hall, Room 101.
Students interested in joining can find them on HuskieHub, attend club meetings or contact Bratcher. No dues or fees are required to join.
