Faculty grasp for power

You offer someone an inch and they take a mile. At least that’s what University Council member Eleanor Godfrey is trying to do.

University Judicial Director Larry Bolles requested an extra seven faculty members to serve on the Judicial Hearing Committee in order to ensure adequate representation and make life a little easier.

So Committee Chairman Godfrey decided to take it upon herself and try to increase the hearing board from 18 to 50. This move appears to be a part of the overall goal of some faculty members to control the judicial process.

The problems with Godfrey’s plan are obvious. The first being, how in the world is Bolles going to get a hold of 50 faculty members who are willing and able to serve on this body.

In addition, when choosing 50 people through a lottery system, it becomes difficult to get a fair representation of faculty members from the different colleges.

Bolles said when he asked Godfrey why she wanted to change the committee the only reason she could give was that it worked well for two other committees on campus.

Bolles said he only could find one such committee that did not resemble the Judicial Hearing Board in any way, adding that board members need to be trained on the judicial process.

Between preparing for classes and publishing, professors appear to have their hands full. Perhaps Godfrey and the others on her team are just rehashing sour grapes from a couple years back when they didn’t get their way.
