DeKALB – The Student Government Association (SGA) repassed all bills from their March 21 meeting following an Open Meetings Act (OMA) violation and passed an additional bill defining major changes to student organizations’ constitutions at their meeting on Friday.
REAPPROVAL AND REPASSING
The SGA reapproved the meeting minutes from their March 7 meeting and struck the minutes from their March 21 meeting due to their failure to post the agenda ahead of their March 21 meeting, which is an OMA violation. Agendas should be posted to Huskie Hub at least 48 hours ahead of each meeting.
All bills that were approved in the previous meeting were repassed during Friday’s meeting including:
- A bill to update the constitution to provide further definition for the supreme court’s Code of Procedures, which passed with a vote count of 11-0-0.
- A bill to update the responsibilities of the chief justice, which passed with a vote count of 12-0-0.
- A bill to ensure a clear precedent for archiving standards for the supreme court, which passed with a vote count of 12-0-0.
BILL TO PROVIDE DEFINITION OF MAJOR CHANGES TO STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS’ CONSTITUTIONS
The SGA passed a bill that requires student organizations to submit major changes to their constitutions to the Organization Oversight Committee for approval. Major changes include but are not limited to:
- Changes that restrict or broaden NIU student membership
- Changes that pertain to the collection of dues within the organization
- Changes to the name of the organization
- More than three sections of updates to an outdated constitution
- Any changes to the constitution that will directly affect the student organization’s tier status
“Any small changes can be handled within the organization itself. This allows for student organizations to amend their constitutions without having to go through organization oversight every single time they want to make a small change,” said Senate Speaker Manny Corpuz.
The bill passed with a vote count of 12-0-0.
SGA senate meetings are open to the public and held in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center on Fridays at 4 p.m.
