DeKALB – Incumbent mayor Cohen Barnes won this years mayoral election with 52% of the vote. All precincts are reporting, but the results are unofficial at the time of publication.
Barnes led the race with 2,415 votes, followed by Linh Nguyen with 1,319 (28%), John B. Walker with 736 (16%) and Kouame M. Sanan with 111 (2%).
In a survey sent to candidates by the Northern Star, Barnes discussed goals relating to economic growth, enhancing the quality of life for DeKalb residents, improvement of infrastructure and more.
“I am a product of DeKalb, a DeKalb High School and NIU graduate, and I am here to stay. This area, which has been so good to myself, my family and my business, is part of why I am running for re-election as mayor of the city of DeKalb,” Barnes said. “It is only fitting that I give back and work hard to create opportunities for others to experience what I have experienced here in the community I love.”
In this years consolidated election there was a 19% voter turnout. In 2023, voter turnout was 10%.
