By C. Paul Kirk

The Cooperative Education/Internship Program will be holding a graphic arts contest during the month of February to get a new logo to reflect the program’s image and establish its identity.

The contest is scheduled to run from Feb. 6 until 4 p.m. on Feb. 22. The winner of the contest will be announced during the first week of March, and will receive an award of $250. All entries must be submitted to Cooperative Education, room 224 of the Holmes Student Center.

“The logo will be used for a variety of purposes.” said Robert Huffstutler, coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts for the Cooperative Ed. program. “It’ll be used for updating brochures, advertising and all printed material.”

The logo contest is one step in a process by the department to update that material which is viewed by students, faculty and business. The entries will be judged by an inter-university selection committee.

Among the judges are Donold Brod, chairman of the journalism department, Pamela Chally, associate chairman of the nursing department, Elaine Bennett design coordinator for Public and Printing and John Detillo from the School of Art.

The entries must represent the mission statement and objectives of Cooperative Education. The logo must include the symbolism of three different entities: emloyer, student and Co-op Ed. All entries must be camera ready, of a sngle color and adaptable to computer.

A clear image of Co-op Ed. is needed even when the image is reduced or enlarged. Words are not allowed as part of the logo. The graphics must not conflict with the design of the NIU logo.

The mission of the NIU Co-op Ed. program is to provide studens with the educational experiences that normally cannot be acquired in the traditional university classroom. The objectives of the program re to broaden student perspectives on careers, widen economic support for students and strenghten relationships between NIU and community colleges. These ideals must be clearly reflected in all entries.

“We’re hoping to get a lot of student involvement out of this,” Huffstutler said.

All participants in the contest must be presently enrolled at NIU and must submit their work to th Co-op Ed. office. Students must include their names and phone numbers on a separate sheet of paper. Contestants may only submit one entry.

The winner of the contest will be announced during the first week of March, and must relinquish all rights to their work upon receiving their award. Logos not selected may be retrieved at the office on or after March 4.

Any inquiries concerning the competition should be directed toward Huffstutler at 753-7138 or by inquiry at the office of Cooperative Education.
