Huskie bus routes subject to change

By Darrell Hassler

Huskie bus officials are thinking about changing the routes around and they want to hear what students think about it.

A committee from the Student Association Mass Transit Board passed route changes on Route 4 and Route 1 to get as many people riding the buses without being passed up by a full bus.

But before changes are approved by the mass transit board on Monday, SA Mass Transit Executive Director Todd Allen said he would like to get calls in his office.

“If the student body has complaints about the system, it does not do any good to keep it to yourself. We are only a phone call away,” Allen said.

The mass transit office phone number is 753-9922.

If the mass transit board approves the changes, Route 4 would go to the Art Building along with stops at the student center.

Route 4 also serves Stevenson, Grant, Douglas and Lincoln halls.

Allen said many students from those residence halls have been complaining about not getting rides to the Art Building, but he said this change would also add five minutes to the route.

The committee also has passed switching the times between Route 4L and 4R. Currently, Route 4L starts at 7 a.m. on weekdays and Route 4R starts at 7:25 a.m. on weekdays.

Mass Transit Co-Vice Chairman Richard Parkman said changing the times would be more efficient.

“If we can set up the right times, more people will be able to ride and less people will be left behind,” Parkman said.

He also said the board rejected the idea of having an express route straight from Stevenson Towers to DuSable Hall.

Parkman said students wanting to stop at other residence halls, such as Douglas and Lincoln, would accidentally get on the wrong bus.

“Anything they see with a Route 4, they are going to get on,” Parkman said.

Another change would be on Route 1, which serves passengers from Suburban Estates, Suburban Apartments, University Heights, Varsity Square and University Plaza.

The new proposal would eliminate the University Plaza stop on Crane Drive.

Allen said he does not think many people use that stop, and he said the intersection at Russell Road and West Lucinda Avenue on the way to DuSable Hall is dangerous.

“People cross in front of the bus (there),” Allen said. “It is just a very dangerous situation.”
