SA senators resign for various reasons
February 11, 1991
Eight Student Association senators recently resigned while the SA internal affairs committee is still working to track down other “ghost senators” not present at weekly meetings.
“It’s hard for the SA to call themselves a representative body when we can barely get 50 percent of the representatives here,” said Sen. Richard Parkman.
All senators who have more than the two absences allowed by the SA constitution were called last week to ask for resignations, said Sen. Kelly Marie McDonald. “Two senators verbally resigned over the phone,” McDonald said.
The senate is looking for interested students to fill vacant seats, said Senate Speaker Preston Came.
The resigning senators had various reasons for leaving the SA.
“The senate is unproductive,” said former Sen. Sadia Ahmed. “It’s not worth my time to spend three to four hours every Sunday to get nothing done.”
Others are unhappy with SA policy for the things it does accomplish.
“The SA does not stand by their bylaws and constitution in terms of budgeting,” said former Sen. Paul Fabrizius.
“Allocating funds to two greek councils—one black, one white—is racist. Allocating funds to two university councils is racist,” Fabrizius said.
“Separate is not equal, according to the U.S. Constitution in the case of Brown v. Board of Education,” Fabrizius said.
Fabrizius said he is in favor of combining the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils with the Black Greek council in order to reduce animosity on campus in general.
In other business, SA budget approvals were as follows:
