SA awaits BOR answers

Student Association officials and administrators are waiting for answers from the Board of Regents about how much control the SA senate should have over student fees, an NIU official said.

Gary Gresholdt, assistant vice president of Student Affairs, said he asked BOR Chancellor Roderick Groves to clarify the rules about how administrators and the Student Association should handle student fee money.

However, the clarifications won’t arrive in time for today’s meeting between administrators and SA officials, said Grove’s assistant Cheryl Peck.

Peck said the clarifications would be in the mail today, but she would not give the contents of the letter.

Gresholdt said, before learning that the letter would not arrive, he hoped the clarifications would be available for the meeting.

“For us to progress in formulating recommendations some interpretation (from the regents) for regulations will be needed,” he said.

The meetings between SA officials and administrators is an advisory board that will recommend to Vice President of Student Affairs Barbara Henley how student fee money will be handled.

Henley created the board after SA officials questioned her right to allow $850 of student money for art gallery refreshments after the SA senate had earlier denied the funding.

The last meeting was held over semester break on Dec. 20. Gresholdt, who would not be specific about what was discussed during the two hour meeting, said board members began making suggestions to improve the budgeting process.

“We’re still in the preliminary stages,” he said.

Student Regent Jim Mertes and SA President Rob McCormack, who attended the meetings, said they were both impressed by the administration’s sensitivity.

“They are listening to everything we have to say,” Mertes said.

An open letter to the students said that the advisory board is supposed to give their recommendations to Henley next week.
