When I first started college, I was an education major. I knew I wanted to be a teacher, so I decided to major in middle-level education. I wanted to teach history or English.
However, after having a teaching internship during my freshman year, I decided teaching children wasn’t for me. Then I decided to switch my major from education to English, with goals of being a writer or journalist.
However, that time period was also pretty stressful, knowing that I would have to be in school longer with changing my major and not knowing what career I was going to pursue after college.
After changing my major, I was told things such as “Why did you switch? Everywhere needs teachers,” “Your major is useless” or “You’re not going to get a job with an English degree.” Being told these phrases made me wonder and question if switching my major was the right choice.
There are numerous articles online with lists of the most “useless” majors ranging from music to psychology. Seeing these articles may be discouraging if someone sees their major on these lists. It may make them wonder if they made the right decision in their major.
However, every major matters and is important. There are numerous jobs and careers out there, regardless of what your major is. Students choose their majors based on what they enjoy and their intended career path. No major is “useless” and students should not feel discouraged or question whether they chose the right major.
My degree will be applicable to my life because no matter what job I may have, writing will be important. My degree will provide numerous job options for me, ranging from a technical writer to a journalist. Although breaking into the world of writing may not be easy, it is still something I wish to do. Although my major may be useless to some, it is crucial to getting me where I want to be in my career.
