The Society for Technical Communication will hold its first organizational meeting Jan. 17 at 9 p.m. in Reavis 211. STC involves majors such as art, communication, English and the sciences; all majors are welcome.

State office closings

All Secretary of State offices and facilities will be closed for Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 21. Driver services facilities outside Cook County, normally open Tuesday through Saturday, will be closed Saturday, Jan. 19, and will reopen Jan. 22. All other state offices and facilities will be closed Jan. 21, and will resume business Jan. 22.

Snow sculpting competition

Registration is under way for the Fifth Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition to be held Feb. 6-9 in Rockford’s Sinnissippi Park. Deadline for team entries in the 1991 event is Dec. 17. Teams will get food and housing while they stay in Rockford. They’ll work on five-ton, six-foot by six-foot by ten-foot blocks of compacted snow to create frozen works of art.
