Student leader arrested

The Student Association academic affairs adviser was arrested Saturday for underage drinking, police said Monday.

Colleen L. Halliman, 20, 832 Ridge Drive, Apt. 11, was arrested by DeKalb Police at Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant and Flamingo Lounge, 214 E. Lincoln Hwy.

“It was just a routine bar check by an officer. Two underage people were arrested,” said DeKalb Police Lt. Dick Moudy.

Lisa R. Ellerge, 20, 928 Grant South, also was arrested and charged with accepting alcohol as a minor.

Halliman, her brother and Ellerge allegedly were drinking in the downstairs bar when police made a usual identification sweep, reports stated. The bartender said Halliman’s brother ordered the drinks, reports stated.

“We were in Eduardo’s just to cool out,” Halliman said. “We didn’t have anything to ‘drink-drink.’ There wasn’t big alcohol floating around the table.

“It’s tight being a student leader,” she said. “I have no social life here. I need to learn to relax. My brother tells me we (student leaders) are being watched and ‘you can’t do A, B and C here.'”

However, the arrest “served its purpose,” Halliman said, adding she would not try to drink in bars again until she turns 21 in April.

Michelle Emmett, University Programming and Activities director, said it’s important to remember Halliman is innocent until proven guilty.

“One would hope student leaders would be role models for all students,” Emmett said.
