Chapels offer special services in war-time

At a time of war and uncertainty in the Persian Gulf, some campus ministries are holding special programs and keeping chapels open for prayer.

The Wesley Foundation, 633 W. Locust St., will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Saturday. On Sunday, a special 10 a.m. celebration of peace and justice in honor of Martin Luther King will be held, touching on aspects of the Gulf crisis. In addition, the foundation will hold a program on draft counseling Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Newman Catholic Center, 512 Normal Road, is not holding any special services, but the chapel will be open seven days a week until midnight for individual prayers.

Glad Tidings Assembly of God, 530 Charter St., has started a “Yellow Ribbon Prayer Corps” bulletin board with the names of parishioners’ family and friends who are stationed in the Persian Gulf. Associate Pastor John Plake said anyone is invited to pray and keep these people in their thoughts.

Plans are in the works for a weekend prayer vigil at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 511 Russell Road, and further details will be available by calling 756-6669.

Several other campus ministries said Thursday they hadn’t planned specific activities in light of the Gulf conflict because they simply hadn’t had time to respond to Wednesday’s air attack on Iraq. Other activities may be planned at a later date.
