In the dead of night, all is quiet, all is right. Then, Wednesday wakes up in the house of a serial killer, but she’s not afraid — he should be.
Part 1 of “Wednesday” Season 2, opens with a frightening good time. Set after the events of Season 1, the show starts during a new school year at Nevermore Academy, with the characters still feeling the effects of the previous year.
If you were missing the macabre and dark humor of the rest of the Addams family in the first season, then Season 2 is for you.
In this season, the main cast of the Addams family join the show to create a spooky good time.
Isaac Ordonez returns as Pugsley Addams, now a student at Nevermore. Ordonez gives a quirky and energetic performance as he’s shown to have inherited electric powers, like his Uncle Fester, played by Fred Armisen.
Season 2 features much more of the family dynamics between the Addams with Catherine Zeta-Jones giving a stunning performance as the matricarch of the Addams family, Morticia.
One of the main plot points of the season is Wednesday’s relationship with her mother. Things get crazy when Wednesday’s mother and father (Gomez Addams, played by Luiz Guzmán) decide to stay at Nevermore for the duration of the season.
This occurs because Morticia wishes to keep an eye on her daughter for misusing her psychic powers. The principal (Steve Buscemi), also wishes for Morticia to be the chairwoman for the upcoming fundraising gala.
While Season 2 is chock-full of fun and spooktacular times, it can get a bit muddled in many plot points such as a mysterious stalker, who turns out to be just a fan girl obsessed with Wednesday, wrapping up the Hyde plot points from the last season, a rogue zombie and of course an asylum with illegal experiments.
There’s also psychic chinangis and a mother-daughter duo not getting along in the story line, which is mirrored by both Wednesday and Mortica and Morticia and her mother, Granny Frump (Joanna Lumley).
At times it can all be a bit much to keep track of, with often the audience being left with more questions than answers.
Still, despite these shortcomings, the show continues to deliver powerful performances and the signature Addams family humor that’s easy to enjoy.
The relationship between Wednesday and her mother was incredibly powerful, with both Ortega and Zeta-Jones giving their a-game. It felt real, as if they were channeling their own experiences to create a realistic dynamic that is easy to relate to. It felt like they were actually related and that you could see both sides of where they were coming from in their disagreements.
Besides their acting, the show also stood out in its costuming, set pieces and special effects.
All of the costumes were on point, especially Morticia’s. From stunning gothic gowns, to goth outdoor attire, it really helped to immerse viewers in the world the showrunners created.
Part 2 of “Wednesday” Season 2 comes out Wednesday and is sure to give viewers more ghoul-ishly good times as the many plot points come to head at the end of Part 1, with Wednesday ending up in coma.
Part 2 will be 4 episodes to finish off the season with 8 full episodes, the same total season 1 had although it wasn’t split into two parts.
Also of note, Part 2 is reported to feature Lady Gaga as a new teacher at Nevermore, which is something to make viewers more excited to watch.
