Imperials to bedazzle DeKalb
January 31, 1991
Get prepared for the “strange new world” of the New Duncan Imperials, a Chicago-based group that brings its show to DeKalb for the first time ever on Feb. 2.
NDI, formed one year, five months and 11 days ago, is known for flamboyant, loud, “hillbilly frat party” music, and a stage ow to match.
Take, for instance, the titles of some of their songs: “I’m Schizophrenic (No I’m Not),” “Motel 666,” “Hamhocks,” “6-pack of Love,” and their anthem, “Jagermeister.” Rest assured—all their other songs are just as colorful. In fact, the band just released its first full-length CD/cassette release on Pravda Records Inc., titled “Hanky Panky Parley Voo!”
NDI’s stage show is chock full of toys and crazy antics. Their activities include dance contests, like the Velour Sex Dance contest that culminates in the awarding of an ultra-hip velour shirt to a lucky audience member. And of course the band has a song entitled “Velour.”
The band also passes out cookies and milk (in urine specimen containers), Barry White posters, whistles and various other prizes it happens to have on hand to the crowd.
NDI is comprised of guitarist and singer Pigtail Dick, bassist and singer Skipper, and drummer Goodtime. All members come from other bands (including an Elvis tribute act).
Skipper first met Goodtime while playing in a cajun‘ blues band in Memphis. During a bar brawl one night, his whole band got thrown in jail. Goodtime was also in the same jail for drinking, and as Skipper said, “We got to talking, and were both sick of playing the low class bar scene.”
So they both moved to Chicago, where one night they noticed Pigtail, playing in a group called “Plasma Drain.” “We stole him,” Skipper said, and after about 15 beers, the three decided to form their own band.
“We wanted to get a band together with the smallest amount of equipment possible,” Skipper said. True to their word, aside from all their props, NDI doesn’t use many instruments. In fact, Goodtime’s drum set consists of only a kick-drum, snare and high-hat.
The NDI show will be at Otto’s, 118 E. Lincoln, and there will be a $2 cover for the show. DeKalb’s very own Renfields will be opening for the band, and NDI is expected to take the stage around 10:30 or 11 p.m.
“We’re like one big third grade party,” said Skipper. “It’ll be the best show DeKalb’s seen in a week or two.”
