DeKALB – A new NIU student swimming group, “H2O Huskies,” is making its debut this year. The club consists of six members and is actively seeking more like-minded individuals with a love for swimming.
The group, advised by graduate student Rachel Rushing, is working with NIU Recreation to become officially recognized as an NIU student organization.
Hunter McLeod, president of the swim club, discussed what a typical practice will look like.
“Our practices are based off of strength, endurance, intensity and the muscle group that we’re basing off of,” McLeod said.
Despite the power behind each workout, the club is beginner-friendly as well.
“We base a workout off of what certain swimmers have to work on or what we see that group of swimmers struggling on,” McLeod said.
McLeod also discussed the purpose and benefits of the club.
“I think it’s a life skill that a lot of people lack in some cases,” McLeod said. “I teach swimming lessons to adults and kids. It’s a skill. It’s a sport that doesn’t just work out one part of your body.”
In regards to safety concerns, McLeod added that club members are lifeguard certified in case of emergency.
“Me and two other executive members are lifeguard certified. We have also been swim instructor certified and coaching certified,” McLeod said.
Another member, Irina Mihai, shared her thoughts on the club and encouraged others to join.
“I do think it’s a good idea for everyone to know how to swim,” Mihai said. “My idea for the club is to improve people’s skills.”
The group encourages any students interested in joining to contact Mihai at [email protected] or look for flyers with QR codes posted around campus.
Details on when and where practices will be held have yet to be decided.
